Where am I? How far is it to the next town or street? What does the landscape look like? These are certainly very important questions for offroad tours. But apart from that, it is always good to know the exact position so that family and friends can follow your trip when they know your co ordinates.
In communication, I distinguish between 'short range' and 'long range' which means communication with home and communication with my colleagues in other cars. Various possibilities exist here too. For 'long range' I can use Internet Cafés, Mobile (if in range of radio reception), amateur radio (via Echo Link) or satellite telefones. It's a question of budget and comfort. But with the necessary equipment and some tricks, it is possible to phone free of charge around the globe.
However, for good navigation and communication, equpment is not enough. Some knowledge is also necessare. I recommend everybody to be aware of that before driving to very remote places.
